The best Xbox One games and Xbox One exclusives that have been released this year. These are the games you should be playing
The year may be rapidly coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on any of the last 12 months of Xbox gaming highlights. There’s been a limited number of Xbox One exclusive titles this year – Pit People and the new Forza being highlights – but that’s no reason to despair, as there are plenty of big multi-console titles that are worth checking out as well.
The best Xbox One exclusive games
Sea of Thieves
Creating Sea of Thieves was a daunting task for UK game studio Rare, but one that has paid off. The action-adventure game sees players, acting as pirates (obviously), explore an open world, collect loot and fight other seafarers. There are single-player and multiplayer options with the quests, and emergent gameplay proves a success. Read more about how Sea of Thieves was created here.
Forza Horizon 4
The 11th game in the Forza series is set in the UK – and is one of the first to be set in an open world. An online mode sees up to 72 players sharing the same roads and using any of the game’s 450 licenced cars. Playground Games has also introduced changeable seasons in the game, which means different road conditions.
If strategy games are your thing, then you need to be playing Pit People. What appears to be a bizarre game at first – unicorn horns are used as weapons, for one thing – turns out to be fast-paced and compelling. The cartoon animation, quirky music and the hostile narrator give this game an edge over other titles and it turns out to be a lot of fun.

Red Dead Redemption 2
It’s back, after eight long years. Rockstar’s sequel to Red Dead Redemption may only have been released in October (after several delays) but it has been worth the wait. The game combines old characters with beautiful new scenery, gameplay and a detailed storyline. It’s almost perfect. Read our Red Dead Redemption 2 review here.
Far Cry 5
Released in March 2018, the fifth installment in the Far Cry series has also been the fastest seller of the franchise. For the first time in the first-person shooter’s history, it’s possible to customise your character to explore the large open worlds. There are plenty of new melee weapons as the game’s creators, Ubisoft, decided to focus on making close combat a continued priority for players.
Monster Hunter: World
Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World largely has one objective: for you to track down and kill strange creatures. Once a monster has been killed you can take its resources to create better weapons to fight more monsters. The result is a constant feedback loop of ever more powerful monsters. Just don’t worry about the ethical consequences of the monsters that get in your way. Read more about Monster Hunter: World here.
Cooking has never been more chaotic. This version of the kitchen-based multiplayer adds new recipes: sushi, salad and cake are all thrown into the mix. But the new installment, made by Ghost Town Games, turns things up a notch. This time around you may make a three-step sushi in a blimp as it crashes to the ground and then start straight on a salad for the restaurant you crashed into. Although first released in 2017, Epic’s Fortnite has been the most popular game of the year. The battle-royale series has amassed more than 120 million players across all of its platforms and doesn’t look like it will be caught any time soon.
